Elks Point to expand ll^HT TUESDAY: NEIGHBORS makes AC4TA special By Trisha Marczak Daily Journal Elks Point could be expanding the amount of seasonal campsites available for campers. As of now, the campground hosts 14 campsites designed for seasonal stay, equipped with electrical outlets and water. Such sites are designed for customers to park their campers on throughout the sea son, which lasts from May through en‘*^—I Although there are currently 28 sites with adequate space for seasonal campers, the Elks club has not yet received a permit to offer spaces to campers. That could change on Wednesday when the county land and resource management division makes a decision on whether to grant the permit for summer" 2009. Elks Club trustee Neil Lindgren said the move to expand campground sites is prompted by a need to build up funds for the Elks Club, while also offering a more affordable option for families looking for an alternative summer vacation site. “I think with the economy, rather than go on large extravagant trips, people are staying closer to home,” he said. Inquiries for Elks Point have been steady already, with more contacts and reservations being made for the upcoming summer season than experienced in the past. The Elks Club bar and restaurant has also undergone some cosmetic reserva tions, and now includes a screened in area on the paviUon. Seating inside the restau rant has now also been changed for more of a Friday-night atmosphere. “They’re dl changes for the better,” Lindgren said. The decision regarding tire permit will be made with the county land and resource management division 7 p.m. Wednesday at the county building. I regret not being able to attend the meeting, however, I would wish to make the following concerns known. Our primary concern with the proposed expansion is in regard to the increased traffic that will result from this expansion, and most notably the speeds at which that traffic travels past our homes. We live on Elks Point Road, just a short distance to the east of the Elks Point. We accept that the summer months bring an increase in traffic, however, the speeds at which the traffic travels going to and from the Point is a significant problem. Perhaps due to the isolation of the location, and the straight tar road leading to the Point, the speed limit is frequently ignored, often excessively. Those of us that live there have children and pets, and our concern is that with increasing the number of camp sites, there needs to be some consideration given to addressing the issue of traffic speeds. More campers means more vehicles, which means more speeding. I would respectfully ask that some attention be given to this issue as you consider the proposed expansion.
