Fergus Falls, M. 56537 Re: Hearing on request for variance
by Owen and Grace Thurlow to build
a boat house on Lot # 7, Pel. Bay
Shores 1st Addition
Dear Members of the Board,
Inasmuch as we will be unable to attend the hearing on this variance
set for Sept. 7'th 1982 at 7*30 p. m. , we would like to present the following
statements regarding our position on this request:
1.The covenents set up to control the building on lakeshore property
were designed to preserve the scenic beauty of the lakeshore and to
prevent the construction of such buildings that would detract from
such apj^earance in any way. With this in mind, we do have some
reservations about the granting of the above variance.
While the construction of the proposed boat house would not detract
appreciably from the appearance of our property on Lot# 6, we do feel
that this could become a precedent for similar construction around the
lake. For examples, if the owner of Lot #5 fbe ot^.er side of our
property were to construct a similar building in the same position on
that lot, it would most certainly obstruct our view of the lake and
thereby detract from the value of our property. It would also be
difficult to refuse to grant a variance to that owner if the Thurlow
request for variance were approved,
A boat house of this size (16' x 32' ) appears to be an unusually large
structure for a boat house. There axe cottages on the lakes no larger
than that. It is difficult to forsee that tnis would not obstruct
someones view of the lake. Also, we are not told how high this structure
is to be. Is it a one story or a two story building ? Will there be
a deck on top? A bunk house?
2.
3.
It would appear to us that there are other viable alternatives to the
building of a boat house 2 feet from the lake shore, Storage of boats
can also be accomocated by the consT-ruction of a building at the rear
of the said lot.
If we could be absolutely assured that the granting of this variance would
not become a precedent for the granting of other variances of this type,
we would not be overly concerned with the Thurlow request. However, in
the absence of sucn a guarantee, we feel that we would have to voice our
objection to the granting of this variance.
4.
5.
