Catherine M. Bjorklund - Variance application was approved as requested. (8:30 p.m.)
Catherine M, Bjorklund, Lot 17 Plainview Sandy Beach First Addition, Little McDonald Lake in Edna Township
requested the following: Setback Requirements. For a Deck. Per phone conversation with Mark Bjorklund on May
23, 2013 the proposed 12’ by 28’ deck will be approximately 32’ from the lake/ordinary high water level. Mark
Bjorklund appeared with the applicant at the hearing. The audience was polled with no one speaking for or against
the variance as requested. After consideration and discussion, Rick Wilson made a motion, second by Michael Harris
and unanimously carried, to approve the placement of a 12’ by 28’ deck as described in the variance application dated
May 23, 2013 and as depicted on the submitted drawing approximately 32' from the lake/ordinary high water level.
The applicant’s proposed development is behind the existing string/building line. Other structures in this immediate
area are closer to the ordinary high water level than the applicant's proposed location. The shore impact zone for
general development lakes has been changed from 37.5’ to 50’. The practical difficult is a substandard lot of record.
The applicant's proposed development is consistent with other development within the immediate neighborhood.
Jeffrey and Jill Berg - Variance application was approved as requested. (8:35 p.m.)
Jeffrey and Jill Berg, Lot 12 Rabes Crystal Beach, Crystal Lake in Lida Township, requested the following: Variances
requested for carriage house-garage on main floor and dwelling on second floor:
1. 68’ foot variance from lake ordinary high water level to build at 32 to 34’ from ordinary high water level on
“string line” on north side of proposed structure. Structures on adjoining lots are at 40’ and 30’ from ordinary
high water level.
2. 10’ variance from road right-of-way to build carriage house and other impervious surfaces (concrete patio,
gravel driveway, concrete sidewalks, etc.) to within 10’ of road right-of-way.
Note: Carriage house will be over 10’ from east and west property lines - no variance needed.
Note: Total impervious surface shown on drawing is 25% of total (7,920 square feet) lot size. Total impervious
surface will not exceed 25% of total lot size - no variance needed. The audience was polled with no one speaking for
or against the variance as requested. Dana Reinke represented the applicants at the public hearing. An email from
Mark and Robyn Isaacson in support of the variance as requested was noted for the record. After consideration and
discussion, Steve Schierer made a motion, second by Ward Uggerud and unanimously carried, to approve a variance
of 68’ from the ordinary high water level setback of 100’ and a variance of 10’ from the required road right-of-way
setback of 20’ for the placement of the proposed development as described in the variance application dated May 22,
2013 and as depicted on the submitted drawing 32 to 34’ from the ordinary high water level and 10’ from the road
right-of-way. The variances as approved do not directly or indirectly grant any other variances for the proposed
development. The Board cautioned the applicant’s representative to strongly encourage the applicants to know where
the road right-of-way is and to be careful not cover more than 25% of the eligible lot area with impervious surfaces.
The practical difficulty is a very substandard lot of record. It was also noted that the proposed development is
consistent with other development in this immediate area.
Robert Loerzel - Variance application was approved as requested. (8:53 p.m.)
Robert Loerzel, Lots 4 and 5 Klein and Adams Point, Marion Lake in Dead Lake Township, requested the following:
Requesting a variance of 20’ for placement of structure 0’ from right-of-way as currently exists. Replace a portion of
existing dwelling (already on right-of-way) with a larger new addition, cleaning up the roof line. Add a new holding
tank next to the existing within the right-of-way of the road. A letter from Dead Lake Township was read for the
record. The audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the variance as requested. After consideration
and discussion, Thomas Lee made a motion, second by Michael Harris and unanimously carried, to approve a
variance of 20’ from the required road right-of-way setback of 20' for the placement of a structure as described in the
variance application dated May 21, 2013 and as depicted on the submitted drawing O' from the road right-of-way and
for the placement of a holding tank in the road right-of-way area. The proposed development will not obstruct the view
of the adjoining properties. It was noted that the proposed development is no closer to the ordinary high water level or
the road right-of-way than the existing development.
