Motion was made by David Holmgren, second by Cecil Femling and unanimously carried, to approve a variance of 30
to 36” from the required road right-of-way setback of 20’ for the location of a portion of an existing garage 30 to 36” too
close to the road right-of-way. It was noted that Hobart Township has no objections to the location of the structure and
the present location of the structure will not hinder road maintenance nor will it create a public safety concern.

Byron E. Nelson, Pelican Rapids, MN, requested a variance of 5’ from the required lot line setback of
10’ for the placement of a drain field 5’ from the neighbors North and East property lines. The property
is described as part of Government Lot 5, Section 15 of Pelican Township by Prairie Lake. The
audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the request. After consideration, motion was
made by Cecil Femling, second by Steve Schierer and unanimously carried, to approve a variance of 5’
from the required lot line setback of 10’ for the placement of a drain field 5’ from the neighbors North
and East property lines. The Land and Resource Department noted that the proposed location is the
only available location. Hardship is a substandard lot of record.

Timothy M. Teiken, Frazee, MN, requested a variance of 30 to 36” from the required road right-of-way
setback of 20’ for the location of a portion of an existing garage 30 to 36” to close to the road right-of-
way. The property is described as Lot 1, Sky Blue Water Beach, Lake Six in Hobart Township. The
audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the request. A letter from Hobart Township
approving the location of the applicant’s garage was noted for the record. After consideration, motion
was made by David Holmgren, second by Cecil Femling and unanimously carried, to approve a
variance of 30 to 36” from the required road right-of-way setback of 20’ for the location of a portion of
an existing garage 30 to 36” to close to the road right-of-way. It was noted that Hobart Township has
no objections to the location of the structure and the present location of the structure will not hinder
road maintenance nor will it create a public safety concern.
George and LaRae Stebe - Denied as requested.
George and LaRae Stebe, Winkler, MB, Canada, requested a variance to replace a roof on an existing
oversized storage structure. The present structure contains 380’ square feet of area, the side parallel
to the lake is 20’ 3”, it is 10’ from the lakeshore and 13’ from the lot line. The applicants’ proposed
project would not change the overall size of the structure. The structure has been in this location for 50
to 55 years. To qualify as a water oriented accessory structure the structure must contain no more than
260 square feet of area, must be no more than 10’ in height, must be at least 20’ from the ordinary high
water level and must be at least 40’ from the lot line. The property is described as part of the Reserve
Lot, Wall Lake Point, Wall Lake in Dane Prairie Township. A letter from Tom Carlson in support of the
applicants’ request was read for the record. Mr. Carlson stated that the applicant should be allow to
maintain the 55 year old structure and that his opinion might be different if the applicants’ proposal was
to place a structure in the proposed location if there wasn’t already a structure in that location. The
audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the request. After consideration, motion was
made by Cecil Femling second by David Holmgren to approve the variance as requested. This motion
was later withdrawn as no hardship could be established. After additional consideration, motion was
made by Mark Steuart, second by Steve Schierer and unanimously carried, to deny the variance as
requested noting that no adequate hardship had been shown and the applicants should consider other
more suitable alternatives. It was noted that the existing structure is in a grossly substandard location.
