It was my opinion that the second story was not salvageable. Overloading of the floor in the upper storage area despite the presence of a load bearing beam and posts, along with age and weathering required that the entire second story be replaced. Mr. Lilja requested that the new roof outline be a gambrel barn style roof so that it would match his home. I suggested that the second story replacement could be built out of box beams with the roof and floor consisting of a series of one piece trusses. When the roof plywood and floor plywood where nailed to the series of box beams, a self supporting second story would result and the lower floor beam and post arrangement could be eliminated. Mr. Lilja was responsible for cleaning out the upper storage area and tearing out the floor and most of the old floor joists. I started the project in mid May. I tore off the old roof and removed the remaining floor joists and the beam and post supports. I then replaled the top of the remaining four walls and constructed the gambrel box style 2nd story. Leftover thermal pane glass panels from Mr. Liljas planned residential addition were installed on the north and south ends. 1 ordered and installed siding which matched the four first story walls. I also ordered custom overhead doors to replace the swinging doors in the front of the garage. The doors were installed and the entire structure was painted by Mr. Kevin Pranke. The resulting roof from gradeline to peak measures 17' - 8".
