After talking with the Grefsruds I learned that their Intentions were to fill an old gully which leads down to Big Pine Lake. The purpose for filling is to make it easier to cut grass and generally maintain the lot. It was also mentioned that they did not wish to fill the gully up to the original ground level, but to leave a channel of approximately l-l^s feet below natural ground allowing water to flow from the lot to the lake. With the above information I suggested the following recommendations: 1)Strip all vegetation from the fill area (trees, grass, brush, etc.). Also remove all top soil down to inorganic soils. 2)Fill the area (approximately 75x25 feet) with clean loamy sand material of the same texture and class of what is natural to the fill site. 3)Compact fill material in thin layers as it is placed into the gully with the equipment used to shape site. Approximately 130 cubic yards is needed to fill gully. 4)Do not fill level to natural ground, but leave a channel of l-lh feet below natural ground with a parabolic shaped bottom. If available place 2-4 inches of topsoil on the channel bottom and side slopes. 5)The channel bottom may then be seeded and an excelsior mulch net blanket placed and fastened to the ground (see seeding and ferti lizer specifications attached). If seeding and mulching is used, a low dike should be placed at the head of the fill to prevent SCANNED AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER @ '« water from flowing down channel until grass is established (dike may be removed once grass is established, water during dry periods). 6)The most effective stablizer would be the placing and fastening of sod in the channel bottom extending up the side slope to about 1.0 f©«t of channel capacity depth and then seed remaining area. A dike would not be needed, water sod during dry periods until estab lished. 7)If ample notice is given, supervision of construction by our office could be arranged. If additional information or an explanation of supplied information is needed, feel free to contact our office in Perham, Minnesota. Our phone number is 346-2050. Sincerely, Rogeir M.
