At that time, I was not aware that a permit was required or that I was building too close to the lake front. It is a nice addition and something that we use 90% of the time during nice weather. The cabin itself is over 50 years old and I thought I was improving the appearance and usefulness of the cottage for my family. It was not until the first of this month, when the DNR asked about the addition, that I was aware that a violation had taken place. While ignorance of the rules or laws is no excuse, I can only state that when the porch was added, I was not aware a permit was needed. I did not even think about it. It was simply put on. In the three years the porch has been on, we have not had one complaint or bad comment about it. In fact, the neighbor to the north just added the same style porch to his cottage this month. Even with the addition, we are still further back from the lake front than 5 of the 7 cottages on the beach. Attached are statements from everyone on the beach. They state the addition does not in anyway effect them or their property. The property owners on either side of us, Dennis Awes and Dick Swenson, give their full permission and okay for the addition saying that the porch in no way effects them and in fact, improves their own property. The porch is used and enjoyed by our family and has become an important part of our home. A variance would not cause any problems to anyone on the beach. Again, they, along with the Awes on the south side, like the porch and are in agreement with our request for a variance. We use and enjoy the porch and: it has improved rhe appearance of an older cottage. We hope that after the enclosed statements and pictures are reviewed, that you would see fit to grant the variance, allowing us to keep something that hurts no one and adds a great deal to our use and enjoyment of our cottage. An approved jseptic system is to be installed the week of August- 18th and will be completed by the hearing date in September.
