Motion
Smestad Family LLC - Variance application approved as requested. (6:37 p.m.)
After consideration and discussion, Ward Uggerud made a motion, second by Jodi Sazama and unanimously carried, to
approve a variance of 11 ’ from the required ordinary high water level setback of 100’ for the enclosure (screen) of an
existing deck 89’ from the ordinary high water level. The proposed project will not obstruct the view from the adjacent
properties. When the deck was constructed the required setback from the ordinary high water level was legal. The
variance as approved does not directly or indirectly grant any other variances for the proposed development.

Thursday, June 11, 2015
The Otter Tail County Board of Adjustment met Thursday, June 11,2015, with the following persons in
attendance:

Called to Order - Steve Schierer, Chair called the meeting of the Board of Adjustment to order at
6:30 p.m.
Minutes Approved - The Board of Adjustment approved the minutes of the May 14, 2015 meeting as
mailed.
The Board of Adjustment considered the following applications for variance:
Charles and Maureen Grunewald - Variance application approved as requested. (6:32 p.m.)
Charles and Maureen Grunewald, part of Government Lot 3, Section 21 and part of the Northwest Quarter
of the Northwest Quarter, Section 28 of Otter Tail Township by Otter Tail Lake, requested the following;
build deck (12’ X 24’) over existing patio in bluff zone 225 feet from lake. Requesting 30 foot variance to
be zero feet from bluff The audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the variance as
requested. Letters form Bruce Fuhrman and Bob and Pat Thiel in support of the variance as requested was
read for the record. After consideration and discussion, Paul Larson made a motion, second by Thomas Lee
and unanimously carried, to approve a 30’ variance from the required top of bluff setback of 30’ for the
construction of a 12’ by 24’ deck over an existing patio 0’ from the top of the bluff. The proposed
development is 225’ from the lake, is no closer to the ordinary high water level than the neighboring
properties is being constructed on an existing patio and addresses safety concerns from the upper level. The
variance as approved does not directly or indirectly grant any other variances for the proposed development.

Smestad Family LLC, Lot 4 Block 1 Silent Haven, West Silent Lake in Dora Township, requested the
following: request is to (screen) enclose existing deck which is 89’ from ordinary high water level. Gene
Smestad represented the applicant at the public hearing. The audience was polled with no one speaking for
or against the variance as requested. Letter from Roger and Kathy Ivesdal and Mike and Mel Davis in
support of the variance as requested were read for the record. After consideration and discussion, Ward
Uggerud made a motion, second by Jodi Sazama and unanimously carried, to approve a variance of 11’
from the required ordinary high water level setback of 100’ for the enclosure (screen) of an existing deck
89’ from the ordinary high water level. The proposed project will not obstruct the view from the adjacent
