Motion
Mike and Mona Johnson - Denied. (7:45 p, m.)
After discussion and consideration, Steve Schierer made a motion, second by Michael Harris and carried with Thomas Lee voting
no, to deny the variance as requested noting that the previously approved variance does provide the applicants with a reasonable
use their property and the neighbor has indicated in a conversation with Randall Mann, Chair, stating that with the previously
approve variance he would still have access to his property/garage. The general opinion of the Board is that the previously
approved variance was thought to be the most reasonable location/site for the placement of a single stall garage. It was also
noted that not every property will support everything a property owner might desire.

Brian and Debora Brakke - Approved the variance as requested. (7:42 p.m.)
Brian and Debora Brakke, Lot 21 Block 4 Lida Shores, Lake Lida in Lida Township, requested the following: We
would like to change the pitch of the existing roofline from 4/12 pitch to 12/12 pitch, while replacing worn/old shingles
and rotten roof boards. We are requesting a variance for existing cabin, being 36’ from the ordinary high water level,
placing the cabin in shore impact zone; required ordinary high water level setback is 75’ and the required shore
impact zone setback is 50’. The audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the variance as requested.
After discussion and consideration, Steve Schierer made a motion, second by Michael Harris and unanimously carried
to approve the variance as described in the application dated May 12, 2011 and as depicted on the drawing submitted
with the application. The variance as approved allows the applicants to change the roof line on the existing footprint
of the building (house). There will be no change to the existing footprint and the proposed development will not
negawely impact the neighboring properties.
;e and Mona Johnson - Denied. (7:45 p, m.)
Mike and Mona Johnson, Lots 10 and 11 Meyers Second Addition, West McDonald Lake in Dora Township,
requested a variance of 10’ from the required top of bluff setback of 30’ for the placement of a garage 20’ from the top
of the bluff. Proposed garage will encroach the toe of bluff by approximately 10’. The applicants were represented by
Rob with Moore Engineering, Inc. and by Greg Nelson with Superior Lakeside. The audience was polled with no one
speaking for or against the variance as requested. After discussion and consideration, Steve Schierer made a
motion, second by Michael Harris and carried with Thomas Lee voting no, to deny the variance as requested noting
that the previously approved variance does provide the applicants with a reasonable use their property and the
neighbor has indicated in a conversation with Randall Mann, Chair, stating that with the previously approve variance
he would still have access to his property/garage. The general opinion of the Board is that the previously approved
variance was thought to be the most reasonable location/site for the placement of a single stall garage. It was also
noted that not every property will support everything a property owner might desire.
Darwyn and Wendy Smith - Approved a variance from the ordinary high water level and denied the side lot
line variances as requested with a condition. (8:02 p.m.)
Darwyn and Wendy Smith, Lot 36 Robinson’s Addition, Clitherall Lake in Nidaros Township, requested a variance of
30’ from the required ordinary high water level setback of 100’ and variance of 3’ and 6’ from the required lot line
setback of 10’ for the placement of year round structure 70’ from the ordinary high water level, 7’ from the side lot line
on the southwest corner and 4’ from the side lot line on the northeast corner. A letter from Ruby Biederman opposing
the variance as requested was read for the record. The audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the
variance as requested. After discussion and consideration, Randall Mann made a motion, second by Thomas Lee
and unanimously carried, to approve the placement of a dwelling no closer to the ordinary high water level than the
dwelling to the east and to deny the side lot line setback variances as requested with the condition that the shed
currently located down by the lake and on the lot line must be placed in a location, as verbally agreed to by the
applicant, in a location that complies with the setback requirement of the Shoreland Management Ordinance. The
applicants’ property is a substandard lot of record. Note - the applicant can either remove and relocated the shed or
remove and replace with a new shed so long as the setback requirements of the ordinance are met.
Tom and Irene Yaeck - Approved the variance as requested with a condition. (8:14 p.m.)
Tom and Irene Yaeck, Lot 9 Sandy Haven Development, Stalker Lake in Tordenskjold Township, requested a
variance of 8’ from the required road right-of-way setback of 20’ for the placement of a 30’ by 36’ detached garage 12’
from the road right-of-way. The audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the variance as requested.
After discussion and consideration, Paul Larson made a motion, second by Steve Schierer and unanimously carried,
to approve a variance of 8’ from the required road right-of-way setback of 20’ for the placement of a 30’ by 36’
detached garage 12’ from the road right-of-way with the condition that no more than 25% of the total eligible lot area
can be covered with impervious surfaces. The variance as approved does not directly or indirectly grant any other
variances for the proposed development.
