After consideration and discussion, Paul Larson made a motion, second by Thomas Lee and unanimously carried, to
approve a 30’ variance from the required top of bluff setback of 30’ for the construction of a 12’ by 24’ deck over an
existing patio 0’ from the top of the bluff. The proposed development is 225’ from the lake, is no closer to the ordinary
high water level than the neighboring properties, is being constructed on an existing patio and addresses safety
concerns from the upper level. The variance as approved does not directly or indirectly grant any other yariances .fpj

The Otter Tail County Board of Adjustment met Thursday, June 11, 2015, with the following persons in
attendance:

Called to Order - Steve Schierer, Chair called the meeting of the Board of Adjustment to order at
6:30 p.m.
Minutes Approved - The Board of Adjustment approved the minutes of the May 14, 2015 meeting as
mailed.
The Board of Adjustment considered the following applications for variance:
Charles and Maureen Grunewald - Variance application approved as requested. (6:32 p.m.)
Charles and Maureen Grunewald, part of Government Lot 3, Section 21 and part of the Northwest Quarter
of the Northwest Quarter, Section 28 of Otter Tail Township by Otter Tail Lake, requested the following:
build deck (12’X 24’) over existing patio in bluff zone 225 feet from lake. Requesting 30 foot variance to
• be zero feet from bluff. The audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the variance as
requested. Letters form Bruce Euhrman and Bob and Pat Thiel in support of the variance as requested was

Smestad Family LLC - Variance application approved as requested. (6:37 p.m.)
Smestad Family LLC, Lot 4 Block 1 Silent Haven, West Silent Lake in Dora Township, requested the
following: request is to (screen) enclose existing deck which is 89’ from ordinary high water level. Gene . ,
Smestad represented the applicant at the public hearing. The audience was polled with no one speaking for
or against the variance as requested. Letter from Roger and Kathy Ivesdal and Mike and Mel Davis in
support of the variance, as requested were read for the record. After consideration and discussion, Ward
Uggerud made a motion, second by Jodi Sazama and unanimously carried, to approve a variance of 11’ ,,
from the required ordinary high water level setback of 100’ for the enclosure (screen) of an existing deck
89’ from the ordinary high water level. The proposed project will not obstruct the view.from the adjacent
properties. When the deck was constructed the required setback from the ordinary high water level was
legal. The variance as approved does not directly or indirectly grant any other variances for the proposed . -
development.

Dear Mr. Stein:
Charles Grunewald has discussed with us his proposal to build a 12 foot by 24 foot deck over an
existing patio in the bluff zone, 225 feet from Ottertail Lake, as well as his request for the 30 foot
variance that would be needed to complete this project. As an adjacent property owner, we are in
full support of Mr. Grunewald’s proposal. We do not feel this improvement will negatively
impact us; rather, we believe it will improve the value and appeal of the nearby properties on the
lake.
We would support the Board’s decision to approve his request for a variance.
