Greg and Roxanne Mikkelson - Approved as requested with conditions.
Greg and Roxanne Mikkelson, Apple Valley, MN, requested a variance of 20’ from the required ordinary
high water level setback of 100’ for the location of a building site 80’ from the ordinary high water level.
The property is described as Lot 6, Block 2, Maple Acres, Stuart Lake in Girard Township. Milton Paulson
represented the applicants at the public hearing. The audience was polled with no one speaking for or
against the request. After consideration, motion was made by John Everts, second by Randall Mann and
unanimously carried, to approve a variance of 20’ from the required ordinary high water level setback of
100’ for the location of a building site 80’ from the ordinary high water level with the following conditions: 1)
that the building site will be at least 30’ from the top of the bluff, 2) the building site will be as far to the
north side of the vacated road as possible, and 3) no water oriented accessory structure will be allowed on
this lot in the future. Hardship is the terrain features of the lot. It was also noted that other similar
variances had been granted in this immediate area and that the granting of this variance will not establish
precedence.
Daniel Grundmeier- Denied
Daniel Grundmeier, Battle Lake, MN, requested a variance of 5’ from the required 20’ setback for the
location of a screened deck 15’ from the drain field. The property is described as part of Government Lot
1, Section 26 of Clitherall Township by Crane Lake. A letter from lone J. Peterson in favor of the applicant’s
, ; request was read for the record. The audience was polled with no orje speaking for or against the request.
After consideration, motion was made by Randall Mann, second by Joe Maske'and unanimously carried, to
deny the variance as requested as no adequate hardship had been shown and in the general opinion of the
board adequate area exist on the applicant’s lot that provides the applicant with other reasonable
alternatives.
Olson’s Big Pine Get-A-Way - Approved as requested.
Olson’s Big Pine Get-A-Way, Phillip and Jo Olson, New York Mills, MN, requested a variance to allow the
placement of 3 recreational camping units in the first tier (13 total dwelling units, 7 allowed per the area
requirement) and a variance of 25’ from the required ordinary high water level setback of 100’ for the
placement of a recreational camping unit 75’ from the creek. The property is described as Lots 32, 33, 34
and part of Lots 35 and 36, Block 1, Jackson and Mckee’s Addition, Big Pine Lake in Pine Lake Township.
The audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the request. After consideration, motion was
made by Joe Maske, second by Randall Mann and carried with John Everts and Mark Steuart voting no, to
approve the variance as requested so long as the applicant is in compliance with the prior action of the
Planning Commission. Public safety concerns were noted if these units were placed in the tier across the
road, as well as, the terrain features of the property across the road.
Jeff Ethen - Approved with conditions.
Jeff Ethen, Clitherall, MN, requested lakeshore and septic systems setback variances to erect a roofed and
screened in porch (not three season) along the north (non-lakeside) and west (lake side) portions of the
residence. The property is described as part of Government Lot 5, Section 17 of Leaf Mountain Township
by Spitzer Lake. The audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the request. After
consideration, motion was made by Randall Mann, second by Cecil Femling and unanimously carried, to
approve development with the following conditions: 1) the development must be no closer to the ordinary
high water level than the existing structure, 2) the development must comply with all septic systems
setbacks, 3) no water-oriented accessory structures will be permitted on this property in the future and 4)
the development must be at least 10’ from the south property line. Hardship i^ substandard lot of record
