Armold Mickelson - Approved
Arnold Mickelson, Bloomington, MN, requested a variance of 5’ from the required side lot line setback of 10’ for the
construction of a garage 5’ from the side lot line. The property is described as Lot 18, except a strip on the easterly
side 20’ at the lake and 15’ at the road, Birchwood Shores, Pickeral Lake in Maine Township. Pete Pedersen
represented the applicant at the public hearing. The audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the
request. After consideration, motion was made by Randall Mann, seconded by Craig Anderson and unanimously
carried, to approve a variance of 5’ from the required side lot line setback of 10’ for the construction of a garage 5’
from the side lot line. It was noted that the doors to the garage will be at a right angle to the road. It was also noted
that this is a very reasonable request and is a much better location than previously proposed by the applicant.
Hardship being a substandard lot of record.
Milton Smedsrud - Approved
Milton Smedsrud, Battle Lake, MN, requested a variance to convert an existing one season porch to a four season
living accommodation by extending the main residence to include the existing 12’ by 28’ one season porch which is
currently supported by steel beams and deck planking. The applicant’s conversion plan requires a variance of
approximately 11’ from the required ordinary high water level setback of 100’. The property is described as part of
Government Lots 1 and 2, Section 34 of Tordenskjold Township by Stalker Lake. The audience was polled with no
one speaking for or against the request. After consideration, motion was made by Randall Mann, seconded by Craig
Anderson and unanimously carried, to approve the variance as requested noting that the only change is the
conversion of an existing enclosure from a single season use to a four season use.
Leonard and lone LlebI - Denied
Leonard and lone LiebI, Dawson, MN, requested a variance to place a 12’ by 12’ storage building 2’ from the west
side lot line and 26’ from the ordinary high water level. If the storage building is considered a water - oriented
accessory structure it would need a variance of 88’ from the required west side lot line setback of 90’ and if the
storage building is not considered a water - oriented accessory structure it would need a variance of 8' from the
required side lot line setback of 10’ and a variance of 174’ from the required ordinary high water level setback of 200’.
The property is described as Lot 9, Block 1, Brightwood Shoreline, Dead Lake in Star Lake Township. The audience
was polled with no one speaking for or against the request. After consideration, motion was made by John Everts,
seconded by Craig Anderson and unanimously carried, to deny the variance as requested as no adequate hardship
had been shown and other alternatives are available for the placement of a storage building on the applicants’
property.
Wayne H. Caughey - Approved
Wayne H. Caughey, Perham, MN, requested a variance of 60’ from the required ordinary high water level setback of
200’ for the construction of dwelling 140’ from the ordinary high water level at its closest point. The property is
described as part of Government Lot 3, Section 10 of Edna Township by Rusch Lake. Daniel and Francis Gleason
represented the applicant at the public hearing. The audience was polled with no one speaking for or against the
request. After consideration, motion was made by Craig Anderson, seconded by Cecil Femling and unanimously
carried, to approve a variance of 60’ from the required ordinary high water level setback of 200’ for the construction of
a dwelling 140’ from the ordinary high water level at its closest point. It was noted that the 200’ setback is not feasible
and that the proposed dwelling is setback as far as possible. Hardship being a pre-existing substandard lot of record.
