SECTION 4. FIRST AID MEASURES General advice : Move out of dangerous area. Consult a physician. Show this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance. Do not leave the victim unattended. If inhaled : If unconscious place in recovery position and seek medical advice. If symptoms persist, call a physician. Move to fresh air. Keep patient warm and at rest. In case of skin contact : Wash off with warm water and soap. Wash contaminated clothing before re-use. SAFETY DATA SHEET NAPA® MAC'S WINDSHIELD DEICER Version 1.1 Revision Date: 07/21/2016 MSDS Number: 600000000431 Date of last issue: 05/23/2016 Date of first issue: 05/23/2016 4 / 15 In case of eye contact : Flush eyes with water as a precaution. Remove contact lenses. Protect unharmed eye. Keep eye wide open while rinsing. If swallowed : Get medical attention immediately. Rinse mouth with water. Do not give milk or alcoholic beverages. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. If symptoms persist, call a physician. Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed : Toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled Causes damage to organs. May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure if swallowed. Effects of acute ethylene glycol poisoning appear in three fairly distinct stages. The initial stage occurs shortly after exposure, lasts 6-12 hours, and is characterized by central nervous system effects (transient exhilaration, nausea, vomit- ing, and in severe cases, coma, convulsions, and possible death). The second stage lasts from 12-36 hours after expo- sure and is initiated by the onset of coma. This phase is characterized by tachypnia, tachycardia, mild hypotension, cyanosis, and in severe cases, pulmonary edema, broncho- pneumonia, cardiac enlargement, and congestive failure. The final stage occurs 24-72 post-exposure and is characterized by renal failure, ranging from a mild increase in blood urea nitrogen and creatinine followed by recovery, to complete anuria with acute tubular necrosis that can lead to death. Ox- aluria is found in most cases. The most significant laboratory finding in ethylene glycol intoxication is severe metabolic aci- dosis. Notes to physician : This product contains ethylene glycol. Ethanol decreases the metabolism of ethylene glycol to toxic metabolites. Ethanol should be administered as soon as possible in cases of se- vere poisoning since the elimination half-life of ethylene glycol is 3 hours. If medical care will be delayed several hours, give the patient three to four 1-ounce oral "shots" of 86-proof or higher whiskey before or during transport to the hospital. Fomepizole (4-methylpyrazole) is an effective antagonist of alcohol dehydrogenase, and as such, may be used as an antidote in the treatment of ethylene glycol poisoning. Hemo- dialysis effectively removes ethylene glycol and its metabolites from the body. SECTION 5. FIREFIGHTING MEASURES Suitable extinguishing media : Water spray Carbon dioxide (CO2) Dry chemical Alcohol-resistant foam SAFETY DATA SHEET NAPA® MAC'S WINDSHIELD DEICER Version 1.1 Revision Date: 07/21/2016 MSDS Number: 600000000431 Date of last issue: 05/23/2016 Date of first issue: 05/23/2016 5 / 15 Unsuitable extinguishing media : High volume water jet Specific hazards during fire- fighting : Do not use a solid water stream as it may scatter and spread fire. Do not allow run-off from fire fighting to enter drains or water courses. Hazardous combustion prod- ucts : Carbon oxides Aldehydes Specific extinguishing meth- ods : Product is compatible with standard fire-fighting agents. Further information : Use extinguishing measures that are appropriate to local cir- cumstances and the surrounding environment. Fire residues and contaminated fire extinguishing water must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations. Use a water spray to cool fully closed containers. Special protective equipment for firefighters : In the event of fire, wear self-contained breathing apparatus. SECTION 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Personal precautions, protec- tive equipment and emer- gency procedures : Use personal protective equipment. Remove all sources of ignition. Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing dust. Beware of vapours accumulating to form explosive concentra- tions. Vapours can accumulate in low areas. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Persons not wearing protective equipment should be excluded from area of spill until clean-up has been completed. Comply with all applicable local, state and federal regulations. Environmental precautions : Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Prevent product from entering drains. Do not flush into surface water or sanitary sewer system. If the product contaminates rivers and lakes or drains inform respective authorities. Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up : Contain spillage, and then collect with non-combustible ab- sorbent material, (e.g. sand, earth, diatomaceous earth, ver- miculite) and place in container for disposal according to local / national regulations (see section 13). SECTION 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE Advice on protection against fire and explosion : Take necessary action to avoid static electricity discharge (which might cause ignition of organic vapours). Keep away from open flames, hot surfaces and sources of ignition. Use only explosion-proof equipment. Do not spray on a naked SAFETY DATA SHEET NAPA® MAC'S WINDSHIELD DEICER Version 1.1 Revision Date: 07/21/2016 MSDS Number: 600000000431 Date of last issue: 05/23/2016 Date of first issue: 05/23/2016 6 / 15 flame or any incandescent material. Advice on safe handling : Open drum carefully as content may be under pressure. Provide sufficient air exchange and/or exhaust in work rooms. Do not breathe vapours/dust. Do not smoke. Take precautionary measures against static discharges. Dispose of rinse water in accordance with local and national regulations. Container hazardous when empty. Smoking, eating and drinking should be prohibited in the ap- plication area. For personal protection see section 8. Conditions for safe storage : BEWARE: Aerosol is pressurized. Keep away from direct sun exposure and temperatures over 50 °C. Do not open by force or throw into fire even after use. Do not spray on flames or red-hot objects. Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Observe label precautions. No smoking. SECTION 8.
