Discussion -Septic System
Bill Steinhoff, owner of Oak Lodge Resort on Lake Lida, stressed the importance of proper
installation and inspection of .septic systems. He purchased Oak Lodge Resort in 1975 and
received a certificate, at that time, that the septic system was up to code. He later discovered that
the system was not up to code and that pollution was occurring because of an improperly installed
septic system. Mr. Steinhoffs concern is that there are other resorts unknowingly polluting the
lakes similar to his experience. Mr. Steinhoff noted that the lakes are so important in Otter Tail
County and that we need to keep them clean. The tourism industry is a very valuable resource for
our county. Commissioner Lee noted that the State Health Department had jurisdiction over
resorts back in 1975 and that was a problem that has been corrected. Chair Partmann thanked
Mr. Steinhoff for appearing and reminding the board of the importance of the environment, lakes,
and tourism industry.
